Rodent Awareness Week

As the crisp Autumn leaves are beginning to fall and we round up our flannel blankets, rodents are also seeking warmth and shelter inside homes. Rodents such as mice, rats and squirrels are a lot more than just a nuisance and to encourage awareness the National Pest Management Association (NPMA) created Rodent Awareness Week which is October 22-28 this year.

Typically small in size, rodents can create really big problems for homeowners. Not only do rodents carry and transmit numerous diseases, mouse urine droplets can trigger asthma attacks in children. These pests also rarely travel alone often bringing fleas, ticks, mites, and lice into your home! Additionally, Rodents are also extremely destructive when nesting.  They can chew through drywall, wood, and wiring.

You may think your home is well-sealed, but you might be surprised at how tiny an opening they really need to gain entry.  Norway rats can squeeze through holes the size of a quarter and house mice only need one the size of a nickel.  Roof rats are one of the top invaders this time of year.  They typically live in trees, but relocate to warm attics during the colder months.  Some preventative measures you can take to ensure your home is rodent-free this winter include inspecting your home and sealing any cracks or holes in the foundation and/or exterior walls as well as maintaining a clean home. Don’t leave pet food sitting out as the smell of food can attract rodents. Also be sure to keep outdoor cooking areas and grills clean.

Signs a rodent may be invading your home include visible droppings, gnaw marks, burrows, damaged food packages, and noises.
