Scratch, Scratch. Signs that squirrels may be in your attic.
That perfect time of year is almost here, with the crisp autumn air circulating and the leaves changing colors. However, there are some unfortunate consequences of the weather change as well. Squirrels finding a new home in your attic! With all the species of squirrels, rats, raccoons, and other rodents, how can you tell what’s lurking up there? Luckily, squirrels don’t hide their tracks very well so it is easy to identify if they are in the attic by using the three S’s: sound, smell, and sight.
- Sound: Unlike raccoons, squirrels are active during the day and sleep at night. Sounds will be most prominent in the morning and throughout the day if squirrels have invaded. The louder the noise, the easier it is to identify the rodent- since squirrels are larger than mice, they will produce a louder sound.
- Smell: Squirrels aren’t poop shy. They urinate and excrete small droppings, about 3/8” to ½” in size. You can tell how recent the issue is by the color of the droppings, as well. The darker the droppings, the more recent. Their urine has a foul odor and will become very noticeable.
- Sight: Acorns aren’t the only things that squirrels chew on. They will chew on just about anything - including the entry points. If you hear noises and smell odors, check to see if there are any open entry points around your home. Roofs and chimneys are the most common, but they also will climb up trees and the siding of the house.
If you have followed the three S’s and identified that you have a problem, it’s time to do some rodent control. Contact a licensed wildlife service professional from Arrow Exterminators for help with squirrel removal in your attic.
