Spring Weather Brings Swarming Termites

Punxsutawney Phil, the nation's most famous groundhog, did not see his shadow this year, meaning that April showers and May flowers are right around the corner. While the warm weather and green grass will be a nice change from the harsh winter conditions we've experienced this year, it also means that termite season is upon us. Termites are something all homeowners need to be aware of, whether your home is old or new. Each year, termites cause more than $5 billion in damages, and often times, the damages are not covered by homeowners' insurance.

Termites are industrious pests - they're active morning, noon and night, seven days a week. In addition to chewing through wood, they also chew through concrete, wood, carpeting, floors and even wallpaper.

Signs of a termite infestation include:

• Evidence of mud tunneling in, over and under wood structures;
• Wooden structures exhibit darkening or blistering;
• Damaged wood becoming extremely thin.

Subterranean, drywood and Formosan termites are the most common types of termites. They usually become active this time of year, flourishing as soon as temperatures begin to rise. Look for an increase in termite infestations after a heavy rainfall because termites are attracted to moisture.
