Stink Bugs, Kudzu Bugs and Carpenter Bees Spring into Action

Spring is officially here! We are all familiar with the saying "April showers bring May flowers," but unfortunately these showers coupled with the warm weather have more than just flowers popping up all over the place. Stink bugs, kudzu bugs and carpenter bee populations are on the rise causing a major headache for homeowners. Keep reading to learn how to prevent these pests from entering or damaging your home.

Stink Bugs and Kudzu bugs started as a problem in only a few states and now are both found in many states from coast to coast.  Although they do not pose serious property or health threats, these stinky pests emit a strong odor when disturbed, frightened or squished and they can damage fabric, clothing and furniture with their droppings.  As these pests emerge from their winter hiding spots we encourage you to always check your belongings before entering the home since these pests often hitch a ride on boxes and in grocery bags. You should also seal any entry points into the home and make sure all screens on doors and windows are in good repair.

Carpenter bees are also causing a buzz this spring! These large bees resemble bumblebees but the missing yellow stripes and shiny black abdomen can help you identify them.  Carpenter bees are much more than a dive-bombing nuisance, they can cause serious damage to your home as they bore holes in wood to create a nesting spot for their eggs.  Although the males are more aggressive, actively protecting the nests, only female carpenter bees have stingers and will only use them if provoked. Because carpenter bees prefer wood that is bare and unpainted they tend to target areas around the house such as decks, fences, shingles and wooden lawn furniture. Painting and staining wood can sometimes deter carpenter bees but the best action is to call a professional pest control company immediately if you find suspect an infestation.
